One idea is a 'sliding panel' that slides in and out when mouse is moved in a specific way, e.g.:
The panel is initially hidden. Once the mouse approaches e.g. left edge of the window, the panel slides in from the left (this sliding may be animated) and occupies some portion of the window. It stays there until mouse is moved away from it - then it slides back and disappears.
